Constructed in different stages starting in the 15th century, the Paredes-Saavedra Palace is a small urban fortress located within the walled city of Cáceres.
The complete renovation of the building was carried out by Tuñón y Albornoz Arquitectos, led by architects Emilio Tuñón –winner of the 2015 Gold Medal for Fine Arts and the 2022 National Architecture Prize– and Carlos Martínez Albornoz.
The building is organised on three floors around a small, asymmetrical interior atrium, with a courtyard at the rear, and is the result of the concatenation of spaces that were built at different times.
The renovation and rehabilitation project was carried out to create eleven new rooms that complement the offerings of theHotel Atrio Relais Chateaux.
The intervention is based on respect for the original structure of the historic building, incorporating contemporary architecture that, like an interior garment, covers the existing surfaces with wooden vaulted ceilings on the ground floor and coffered ceilings, also made of wood, on the two upper floors.
Casa Palacio Paredes-Saavedra has 11 superior rooms, ranging from 60 to 120 square meters, with vaulted ceilings and distributed across three floors.
Each room features a work area and a very spacious bathroom, with a separate toilet and double shower in soundproofed, solid oak enclosures, and a large, one-piece marble bathtub.
Each room is unique: some have a fireplace, and one even has a grand piano.
In all of them, we've carried out impressive carpentry work, with integrated cedar murals complemented by works of art (such as Jorge Galindo's mixed-media paintings, which also appear on Atrio's upcoming wine list, or the facsimiles of Goya's Los Caprichos, fifth edition, which decorate the tower room).
Each suite features an integrated 1950s bar cabinet, lined in gold leaf and with a mirrored interior, offering guests a selection of spirits.
The room furnishings are exclusive Nordic-made pieces, crafted from the highest-quality woods (by designers such as Thonet or Carl Hansen), and are paired with lamps such as the iconic Louis Poulsen desk lamp (in the Art Deco style) and the AJ Royal by Arne Jacobsen, manufactured by Santa & Cole.
